Unauthorized Holiday Villa Demolition: Peter Gillis and Oostappen Group Face Consequences

2023-06-27 11:11:20

The Dutch entrepreneur Peter Gillis and the Blauwe Meer holiday estate of his Oostappen group must demolish an unauthorized holiday villa on the estate, located in Lommel (province of Limburg), within ten months. Otherwise, a fine of 250 euros per day of delay will be imposed. The entrepreneur received a fine of 8,000 euros, half of which was suspended, while the Oostappen group received a fine of 60,000 euros, half of which was also suspended.

If Peter Gillis or Oostappen do not demolish the property in time, the municipality of Lommel or the town planning inspector can take matters into their own hands, but the costs will then be recovered from them. This was decided on Tuesday by the criminal judge of Hasselt.

The villa in question, built between May 1 and August 1, 2019 with a total dimension of approximately 15 meters by 16.5 meters and a height of 7.5 meters at the ridge, might accommodate 16 people. The objective was to provide group accommodation, as 15 other dwellings were planned next to the show house. A great project that has since been abandoned.

The Dutch entrepreneur claims to have had the confidence of an architect who also sat on the college of aldermen of Lommel. According to the Hasselt court, Mr. Gillis knew that the villa had to be regularized before construction work began.

Peter Gillis and the holiday estate had requested a suspension, but the court deemed this decision unacceptable given the seriousness of the facts. “They started to build the house, knowing that it was not legal. During the process, at least three trees were also felled”, explained the judge in particular.
