Uncovering the Mystery: The Rare AR-15 Used in the Brussels Attack

As part of the investigation into the terrorist attack that occurred on October 16, 2023 in Brussels, a man was arrested this morning for questioning, the federal prosecutor’s office announced. The person will be interviewed during the day by investigators on his possible involvement with the weapon used by Abdesalem Lassoued, an AR-15 type war weapon. The investigating judge will then decide whether to bring the suspect before him or whether an arrest warrant should be issued.

Abdesalem Lassoued shot dead two Swedish football fans last Monday and seriously injured another in Brussels with an American AR-15 assault rifle. There are many questions about this weapon, as it circulates quite rarely in criminal circles. “If it comes to assault rifles, we tend to see Kalashnikov or Scorpion type weapons, but an AR-15 type weapon is very rare,” explained to Evening the director of the Vlaams Vredesinstituut Nils Duquet. Indeed, the majority of weapons in circulation in our country, and in Europe, come from the former Yugoslavia, where the American assault rifle was not used.

The weapon of war – an M4, a type of AR-15 inspired by the M16, according to the police file drawn up after the neutralization of the assailant – was finally found almost thirteen hours after the first shots, in a bag belonging to the perpetrator of the attack. Several hypotheses exist as to how the weapon ended up in the hands of the perpetrator of the attack. The most likely being a theft somewhere in Europe and a purchase on the black market.

The investigation is underway to determine how the terrorist obtained the weapons he had (an assault rifle and three pistols).
