Could the terrorist at Place Sainctelette on Monday evening have been arrested earlier? Police officers encountered him in his neighborhood a few minutes after the attack, and it was not until the next morning that he was neutralized. What happened during an evening and a night of being on the run and stalking?

It was 7:49 a.m. Tuesday morning. Abdesalem Lassoued, 45, was neutralized in a café in Schaerbeek. The end of a run of more than 12 hours. There are still gray areas but little by little, the terrorist’s path is taking shape.

At 7:10 p.m., Monday evening, in the images, we see that the man unpacks his weapon. It was then at the level of Boulevard Ninième de Ligne. A few minutes later, at the same location, at 7:14 p.m., the suspect pointed his gun at a taxi. He fired once and the vehicle started again. The assailant remained there and two gunshots were heard.

Then he got back on his scooter. At the corner, a vehicle which could be the same taxi, was stopped on a one-way street.

At 7:15 p.m., the terrorist arrived at Boulevard d’Ypres on his scooter and chased his second victim. The police quickly arrived on the scene and tried to save the life of a Swedish fan. The latter succumbed to his injuries.

Seven minutes later, the perpetrator of the shooting was filmed on Boulevard d’Ypres. At 7:35 p.m., he made a video published on social networks, and took responsibility for his act. He was then on the sidewalk at Boulevard du Midi, without his helmet but still with his orange jacket.

He then headed home around 8:40 p.m. Two police officers saw him near his home. The author felt he was being followed and managed to escape on foot.

At 8:47 p.m., 500 meters from his home, rue Georges Garnir, we see a man in a t-shirt in a video. This could be the suspect they are looking for. One thing is certain: he was in the neighborhood all night and stayed there until the next morning.

At 7:37 a.m. on Tuesday morning, a witness called police and said they saw the man in a cafe. 12 minutes later, he was neutralized on the spot. He died after more cardiac arrests at 9:38 a.m. at Saint-Luc hospital.

What happened when Abdesalem Lassoued was spotted by police? Our journalist Dominique Demoulin explains that around 8:30 p.m., “two police officers went to the suspect’s home. The latter recorded his video of the claim and put it on the networks. He was identified and his residence was located. It was an apartment building. When the police were nearby, a man came out of the building but the police did not positively identify him. Abdesalem Lassoued noticed that he was being watched. He left a bag and ran away. In this bag, his phone was found. Abdesalem Lassoued fled and the police were unable to find him at that moment. The police could not shoot without precise identification. They called the special units who would arrive on site later. They are going to secure the neighborhood, but Abdesalem Lassoued had not returned to the apartment.”
