Uncovering the Truth: The Controversy of Age Falsification in Dominican Baseball Players

The controversy continues about Dominican baseball players and the falsification of their ages in order to reach Major League baseball. With this, they want to get more out of the lower categories, after having a more advanced development than the rest of the players. Plus, they’re trying to jump on the MLB bandwagon when it apparently would have passed them by.

In the last few hours, the suspension of Anthony Baptist, a New York Mets prospect who was considered one of the best in his class, has been made official. The Majors listed him as number 29 among international prospects.

“Baptist’s signing bonus was $1.1 million. It was announced in January 2023, when the outfielder’s reported age was 17,” indicates Mike Rodríguez on his X account (formerly Twitter).

Metropolitans suspended Baptist for lying about his date of birth and also about his ID. Until now, it is unknown what length of sanction the Dominican will have to serve.

“He was clocked at 6.1 seconds in the 60-yard dash, his speed giving him the potential to not only be a weapon on the bases, but also an excellent defensive center fielder,” quotes Al Bat. “He had shown improvements in ball contact and looked like a future leadoff hitter in New York.”

In 2023 he was seeing action in the Rookie category, there he left an average of .276, 29 hits connected, 2 home runs, 16 RBIs, 29 runs scored, 25 walks negotiated and 29 strikeouts suffered in 105 visits to the batter’s box.
