On administrative leave since the beginning of August, Bruce Arena has resigned from his position as head coach of the New England Revolution.

Richie Williams will therefore be the team’s interim head coach until the end of this campaign, while Curt Onalfo will continue in his role as interim sporting director.

Under investigation by the Revolution due to allegations of “insensitive and inappropriate remarks”, Arena preferred to tender his resignation. The nature of the 71-year-old’s comments have not been released.

The former Revs coach, however, admitted in a press release that he made “mistakes and that he wanted to reflect on the situation in order to correct his actions.”

In a statement, MLS said “an investigation confirmed certain allegations and that if Arena wished to return to MLS, he would have to submit a formal request to the commissioner.”

Arena is the most prolific coach in Major League Soccer (MLS) history, with 262 regular season victories. He also won five MLS Cups and four Coach of the Year awards with DC United, New York Red Bulls, Los Angeles Galaxy and Revolution.

He is also a former United States coach, having led the team to three World Cups, between 1998 and 2006.
