‘Undercover’ Screenwriter Nico Moolenaar Signs Exclusive Deal With Netflix

Belgian-Dutch screenwriter Nico Moolenaar has signed an exclusive deal with Netflix, under which he will produce series especially for the streaming service in the coming years.

The Belgian-Dutch screenwriter and television producer Nico Moolenaar has landed a prestigious contract with the Netflix streaming service. He will produce series exclusively for the American company in the years to come. It is “the first exclusive collaboration with a screenwriter in the Benelux“, Netflix announced on Monday.

Nico Moolenaar is the executive producer and co-creator of Belgian-Dutch television series “Undercover” et “Ferry”. “Undercover”, which already has three seasons, tells the story of two agents – the Belgian Bob Lemmens (Tom Waes) and the Dutch Kim de Rooij (Anna Drijver) – who infiltrate the life of the baron of ecstasy Ferry Bouman (Frank Lammers). The spin-off series “Ferry”, currently being filmed, follows the film of the same name and chronicles Bouman’s early years.

Bane “Undercover”

“After three seasons of ‘Undercover’ and two ‘Ferry’ spin-offs, this seems like the next logical step in my career,” said Nico Moolenaar. He will collaborate with his “regular partners in crime”, screenwriters Piet Matthys and Bart Uytdenhouwen. “I look forward to creating new stories and new characters that can take on the world,” he added.

221 millions

The deal is part of Netflix’s ambition, which has 221 million members, to bring more local content to the Benelux.

“International success”

For its part, Netflix indicated that Undercover’s first season was the most-watched production of the year in the Netherlands in 2019, when it was released on the platform. “Since then, it has become an international success,” said the American giant.

The agreement is in line with the ambition of Netflix, which counts 221 million members, to bring more local content to the Benelux. The streaming service has similar partnerships in other parts of the world as well. Last summer, Netflix notably signed an agreement with African content producers for the third time.
