The number 1722 for non-urgent firefighter interventions was activated after the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) issued a bad weather warning, the FPS Interior announced on Wednesday evening.
An area of rain is currently crossing Belgium from west to east. A fairly active undulation will also form in the second part of the night and Thursday morning with heavy precipitation in places. In the province of Luxembourg, placed on yellow alert between 1:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Thursday, accumulations could reach 15 to 25 l/m², or even locally 30 l/m², over a period of 12 hours, specifies the IRM.
The aim of 1722 is to prevent emergency numbers from being overwhelmed by calls for interventions that can wait. In the event of damage caused by a storm or water damage for which assistance from the fire brigade is required, you must therefore dial this number. If a life is in danger, you should call 112.
The FPS also recommends using the electronic counter 1722.be, considered “the most direct way to request help from firefighters in situations where no life is in danger”.
The 112 emergency centers and firefighters always give priority to people whose lives are potentially in danger. “They analyze situations on a case-by-case basis and determine who needs to be rescued first. During a storm or flood, they have to process many requests at the same time,” underlines the federal public service. “Be patient and don’t call back to find out when help will arrive,” he asks.
