Understanding Aging: Groundbreaking Research Reveals Cellular Mechanisms and Potential Interventions

The results of the fundamental research were surprising

Scientists have found a mechanism to accelerate the aging process. Old age begins to set in rapidly when some of the body’s immune cells mistransmit calcium signals into the mitochondria. The results of the fundamental research are published by Nature Aging.

As mitochondria in macrophages age, they lose the ability to absorb and use calcium, which leads to rapid manifestations of aging in the body. Scientists have suggested that by increasing the absorption of calcium into cells, we actually reduce chronic inflammation at the molecular level and slow down aging.

A team of researchers led by Bimal Desai found that macrophages are found in all organs of the body, including the brain. Therefore, it is possible to slow down the aging process at the brain level, simply by adding special drugs that improve the absorption of calcium at the cellular level.

“I think we have made a key conceptual breakthrough in understanding the molecular basis of age-related inflammation,” Desai said.

“Now, moving forward, we need equally ambitious efforts to identify the wiring that controls this mitochondrial process in different types of macrophages, and then creatively manipulate this connection for biomedical impact,” Desai concluded.
