It’s not uncommon to hear people complain of headaches, which are often related to stress, poor sleep, or even sinus problems. But for some, those damned headaches appear following a game of sex. Ranging from a slight gene to a nailing migraine, this phenomenon which may seem unusual is increasingly observed. But where does it come from? Discover Magazine looked into it and tells us all regarding orgasmic headaches.

About 1% of the population concerned

It is estimated that around 1% of the world’s adult population has suffered from orgasmic headaches, but still many people do not feel comfortable talking regarding it. Orgasmic headaches, an invisible evil therefore which might, in reality, affect many more people.

Moreover, according to Discover Magazine, the phenomenon concerns more men, especially those with migraine liabilities. But what is it? These headaches can arise during sexual activity, whether as a couple or alone. According to Kiran Rajneesh, director of the division of neurological pain at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, orgasmic headaches likely have a vascular origin. The pain would occur due to the dilation and swelling of the blood vessels.

Symptoms sometimes different from classic headaches

Orgasmic headaches sometimes present relatively different symptoms from more classic headaches and migraines. The doctor, Kiran Rajneesh explains: “They can manifest themselves in three types: a dull pain which intensifies with increasing sexual activity, a so-called explosive pain occurring suddenly at the moment of orgasm, or when changing sexual position. In the latter case, the headache gets worse when you sit down and gets better when you lie down.”

In addition, these can also be accompanied by nausea and vomiting, blurred vision or a feeling of weakness… In the event of so-called neurological symptoms (confused speech, difficulty speaking) it is essential to act quickly. As Professor Galvez-Jimenez reminds us, at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. “If so, go to the emergency room as soon as possible, because it might be an aneurysm, a subarachnoid hemorrhage or an intracerebral hemorrhage.”

How to get rid of it?

Like a classic headache, sometimes the only solution is to wait. But if the pain sets in and is too intense, do not hesitate to take paracetamol or ibuprofen.

For the doctor Galvez-Jimenez, if you are often prone to orgasmic headaches do not hesitate to take these drugs preventively, regarding thirty minutes before sexual activity. Moreover, for the professor “There is no reason why a person suffering from headaches of sexual origin should not be treated and enjoy this aspect of their life”. According to him, it is time for the taboo to be lifted so that everyone can reconnect with a healthier relationship, and without pain in sex.
