Cerebral epilepsy is the fourth most common brain disease in Hong Kong, but many people are still unfamiliar with the name epilepsy. People suffering from this disease find it difficult to talk about it. Without communication, when attacks occur to varying degrees, people around them may misunderstand the patient. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 50 million people worldwide suffer from epilepsy. Internationally, the second Monday of February every year is designated as International Epilepsy Day to raise social awareness of epilepsy across regions and to create a more friendly social environment for patients with the disease.

In Hong Kong, the disease was renamed from epilepsy to cerebral epilepsy in 2010. The purpose is to reduce public misunderstandings about epilepsy. The International Cerebral Epilepsy Day event has entered its seventh year this year. It is a journey of lasting communication, understanding and support for all those who travel with it. Community education has been continuous for many years. This year’s series of activities with the theme of “Communication” started on February 12, the International Epilepsy Day, and ended in October. Through different platforms, epilepsy patients, family members, and medical staff People and volunteers are able to network together, share experiences and support each other.

At present, based on the estimated incidence rate, the number of patients with epilepsy in Hong Kong reaches 60,000 to 70,000, but about 70% or more of epilepsy patients have their condition under control after taking medication, and their behavior and life are no different from ordinary people. For some patients who have been treated with medication but have not achieved satisfactory results, or whose epileptic seizures are related to certain lesions in the brain, surgery can be considered to remove the areas that emit abnormal brain waves, thereby curing or reducing the number of seizures.

In recent years, there have been breakthroughs in the technology for treating cerebral epilepsy. Surgical treatment has gradually changed from the previous large-scale brain opening to a minimally invasive method, which greatly shortens the operation and patient recovery time. Following “Vagus Nerve Stimulation”, “Deep Brain Electrical Stimulation”, which modulates brain nerve signals through electrical pulses, has also been included in public hospitals’ funded projects for the treatment of cerebral epilepsy in recent years. It is a major benefit to patients. Good news. Therefore, patients can regularly have detailed understanding and discussions with their doctors to adopt appropriate treatment and response methods.
