Understanding Frontotemporal Dementia: Bruce Willis’ Journey and Family’s Experience

Six months following the famous American actor Bruce Willis was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, his wife revealed that it was difficult to know whether he was aware of the extent of his deteriorating condition.

Emma Heming Willis, the wife of the “Die Hard” movie star, announced in a radio interview with the “Today” website that she has been taking care of her husband since the moment he was diagnosed with the disease.

She described the 68-year-old actor as “the gift that keeps on giving and who taught his family love, patience and resilience in the midst of their grief.”

“Frontotemporal dementia is often misdiagnosed,” she said, but she noted that finally knowing the truth regarding his disease does not make it any less painful, but realizing what is happening to Bruce makes it relatively easier now.

She added, “It is difficult for the person who is diagnosed with dementia, and it is also difficult for the family… and when our daughters say that this is a family disease, it really is.”

Bruce Willis retired from acting for the first time in March of last year, following his family publicly revealed that he was suffering from aphasia, a neurological condition that impairs people’s language processing, including their ability to read and write. Last February, Willis’ family announced that his condition had developed into frontotemporal dementia.
