The trip that had initially been planned with her sister took place with her friends heading to Mallorca, Spain. There everything was successful, however, back in Neath, her town, she noticed a strange sore throat that did not stop. The 17-year-old girl, Leah Rogers, could not eat or drink, she went for medical attention, but the painkillers had no effect. She was later admitted to intensive care where she died.
The young woman’s mother, Kathryn Williams, told the publisher Wales Online what happened in an interview. “We thought we would finally see an improvement, so we felt a little calmer. The disease that the young woman suffered from is partially fatal, as it is treatable using medications that suppress the immune system, since the problem of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis is an immune disorder in which the body does not attack infections as it should and ends up fighting against itself. , affecting healthy cells, platelets and tissues, generating serious damage to certain organs. By suppressing the immune system it helps reduce physical damage.
Unfortunately, Rogers was not diagnosed in time, which caused her death, but it is not surprising, this disorder is very rare (it occurs in approximately 1 in every 50,000 people) and it is very difficult to establish since its symptoms are very common and tend to be confused with other conditions.
Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) can be caused by two causes. The first is due to a hereditary problem of the immune system or, in a second option, due to an alteration in the system, so it is a disease that can break out at any age, although it is more common in babies and children in early childhood. .
After the death of his daughter, Hugh Rogers, opened a fundraiser for research purposes on LHH. He told the same media that the grieving process has been tremendously painful for him and his family: “We all just can’t understand it; “We all think this is just a bad dream that one day we can wake up and she will be there.”
