A new study is adding more understanding to the symptoms of long-term COVID-19, which persist after infection for months or years.

The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health and published in the medical journal JAMA, Thursday, identified 12 of the most common symptoms associated with long-term Covid, with the aim of helping researchers develop much-needed treatment options..

“This study will serve as a foundation for scientific discovery and treatment design,” said study author Dr. Leora Horowitz, director of the Center for Healthcare Innovation and Delivery Sciences.

What are the symptoms?

Researchers examined data from 9,764 adults, including 8,646 people with “Covid-19” and 1,118 people without infection, and then identified the 12 symptoms that characterize those with long-term Covid.

Symptoms include:

  • malaise after exertion (debilitating tiredness that worsens after physical or mental activity)
  • Tired
  • brain fog
  • dizziness;
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Heart palpitations
  • Problems with sexual desire or ability
  • Loss of sense of smell or taste
  • thirst
  • Chronic cough
  • pain in chest
  • abnormal movements

It is indicated that a range of other symptoms were reported by smaller numbers of patients.

The study found that 37 symptoms were identified as being “present more often” 6 months after infection with Covid-19, compared to people who had not had the infection..

Scientists are seeking to find out the causes of long-term symptoms that persist after infection with “Covid-19”, how they affect the body and ways to successfully treat them, to alleviate the problems experienced by the infected and facilitate their return to “normal life”.
