“Understanding Shortness of Breath: Causes and Diagnosis”

2023-05-17 09:13:11

Shortness of breath is a condition in which the patient suffers from difficulty breathing, and the causes may be both cardiac and pulmonary in origin, or non-cardiogenic and non-pulmonary. The patient’s history in the clinic and physical examination is very important. With regard to the examinations that can be performed, we mention, for example, chest x-ray, electrocardiogram, and blood test. In smokers with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), additional tests that monitor lung function may help.

If the patient complains more than pain related to pleuritic pain, we can think of pleural effusion, inflammation of the pericardium, infection, rheumatoid disease, or pain in the chest wall. It is important to rule out life-threatening conditions such as a heart attack, especially after examining the patient’s age and risk factors and checking for additional signs and symptoms such as chest pain, excessive sweating, or heart palpitations.

In addition, tachypnea, heart palpitations, cyanosis, fainting, and hypotension may be signs associated with shortness of breath diagnosing life-threatening pulmonary embolism.

Among other etiologies, the boy may suffer from foreign body aspiration or asthma. Fever can make us focus on the possibility of pneumonia.

It should be noted that shortness of breath may also be caused by anxiety and phobias. Hence, the treatment lies in targeting the cause and can start from managing the condition easily to taking medications for acute cases that deteriorate rapidly, according to what the patient suffers from.
