Audrey de Braine-le-Château was Geneviève Lhermitte’s social worker. She tells us about the ambivalence of her meeting with her and explains that as a social worker, her duty is not to be judgmental while being a good listener. Listening that she would undoubtedly have needed earlier, before taking action according to Audrey.

She says that at the time, she discovered a touching woman: “Despite everything, she was extremely attached to her children. She talked about them a lot and said lots of wonderful things about them. She was a real mother, who loved their children.”

However, Audrey remembers asking herself several times: “But damn, how could she not have found other ways, other alternatives to avoid taking action?” But, with hindsight, she explains that Geneviève Lhermitte must have been in such deep distress that she told herself that it was the only way out to be well with her children. She continues: “And it’s true that in our social work studies, we learn that making a request outside is very complicated for people in difficulty.”

To the question, “Was it an accessory sentence?”, she replies: “For having been around her, she was already condemned by herself. We agree that justice must be done, that it is a heinous crime. But she knew it and that’s why she couldn’t live with it afterwards.”
