Understanding the C02 Tax and VAT Increase: How it Affects Gas Prices at the Pump

Customers who filled up at gas stations across the country this Monday, January 1, saw their bill increase. The fault of the C02 tax and the increase in VAT. The first increased by 5 euros this Monday to settle at 35 euros per tonne. It will continue to increase each year to reach 45 euros in 2026.

VAT for its part had fallen by one point in 2023. The measure being temporary, it goes back to 17%. Concretely at the pump, according to the government press release, the price of a liter of Super 95 gasoline increases by 2.1 cents to stand at 1.481 euros. The increase is a little less for the Super 98 which climbs by 1.2 cents to 1.7 euros. As for diesel, it is up 1.7 cents but it had fallen by 2.9 cents on Saturday. Its price ultimately comes to 1.487 euros per liter.
