After accounting for potential confounding factors such as age, gender, and educational level, the researchers came up with the following results: Carriers of the APOE e4 gene variant aged 65-69 were 37% less likely to have a good ability to detect odors than non-carriers. At older ages, people with this gene averaged 3.2 points, while people without APOE e4 got 3.9 points. The authors note that at the beginning of the study, the memory and mental abilities of the participants in both groups were the same, but in carriers of the APOE e4 gene variant, these abilities decreased more rapidly over time.
