Usefulness of the social partners

Saying he was in favor of “moving forward together” with the unions, Patrick Martin said he wanted to reaffirm the usefulness of the social partners to Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne: “We must let them choose themes, a timetable, agree among themselves , in an autonomous way, without supervising them in a directive way”. Among the subjects that occupy the new boss of bosses, that of bankruptcies in companies: nearly 50,000 between July 2022 and June 2023, according to figures from the Bank of France, compared to 33,000 a year earlier. “We must deduce several things from this: on the one hand that economic models are changing, but also that we are seeing an economic slowdown, due to financing difficulties, because of excessively high interest rates”. Patrick Martin said he was particularly worried about the building sector.

Train to the needs of the job

The number 1 of the Medef sees a paradox in this: “while we should bet on investment because of international competition, and to green our economy”, companies are facing financing difficulties. Patrick Martin also mentioned labor shortages in certain sectors. It is for him to bet on training to reorient towards the needs of the labor market: “I am mobilized on the reform of vocational high schools, because we must not create new categories far from employment”. The same goes for the reform of the RSA.

Asked about the question of wages, the boss of Medef assures that many companies have increased them in recent months: “not all of them can, but some are trying to erase inflation”. Another essential subject of the social calendar, that of the pension reform: it is “behind us on the legislative level”, but “it will be necessary to be patient before seeing the system regain balance. »

At 63, this Lyonnais is one of the 500 greatest fortunes in France. His group, Martin Belaysoud Expansion, announced in a press release on Wednesday that it would entrust its operational management to Franck Bruel, former director of Sonepar, in order to allow the new president of Medef to devote himself fully to “his new responsibilities”.
