Understanding the Link Between Accelerated Aging and Early Onset Cancer in Young Adults

Princess Kate Middleton, the influencer Caroline Receveur, the journalist Clémentine Vergnaud… So many young personalities who have publicized their cancer.

The list is long. Some researchers do not hesitate to speak of an “epidemic” to describe the occurrence of the disease in those under 50.

Thus, according to work published at the end of 2023 in the British Medical Journal, between 1990 and 2019, cancers detected in 14-49 year olds increased by 79%, from 1.82 to 3.26 million.

“Genetic factors are likely to play a role” explained the researchers. “But diets high in red meat and salt, and low in fruit and milk, alcohol consumption and smoking are the main risk factors behind the most common cancers in people under 50 . »

Premature aging

A new work presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research takes this data and completes it.

For scientists at Washington University in St. Louis (United States), “the increase in biological age, indicative of accelerated aging, could contribute to the development of early cancers”.

Our biological age refers to the actual state of our body. It is influenced by various factors such as diet, physical activity, mental health, etc.

Unlike our chronological age, which measures our lifespan. “More and more evidence suggests that younger generations may be aging faster than expected, probably due to earlier exposure to various risk factors and environmental insults,” say the authors.

Which, to verify their hypothesis, calculated the biological age of 150,000 people using nine biomarkers present in the blood (albumin, creatinine, C-reactive protein, etc.).

They observed that individuals born in 1965 or later had a 17% higher probability of accelerated aging than those born between 1950 and 1954.

Accelerated aging was associated with increased risk of cancer. The strongest associations were observed for lung, stomach, intestinal and cervical cancers.

“If our results are validated, interventions aimed at slowing down biological aging could constitute a new avenue for cancer prevention,” the researchers conclude.
