Understanding the Pitfalls of Automated Driving Detection Systems: Tim’s Story

We know that calling while driving can cost you dearly. Not only does this pose a security risk, but if you get caught, the fine can be steep. In Belgium, controls at this level are increasing. But in the Netherlands, they have actually started using an intelligent system that can detect motorists who are in flagrante delicto.

Except that obviously, the system is experiencing some slip-ups. Tim Hanssen paid the price. This Dutchman explains that he received a fine of 380 euros, supposedly for making a phone call while he was driving. But this resident of Echt, in Dutch Limburg, was certain that this was not the case.

After seeing the images taken by the smart camera, Tim was clear. He was just scratching his head… He has since contested his fine but the Dutch police have asked him to still pay the 380 euros owed. The man now plans to defend himself in court.

On the blog on which he recounts his misadventure, Tim explains that he is the victim of a double error. First of all, artificial intelligence – a field in which he works! – and then a human error, the person responsible for verifying the crime having also made a mistake. It remains to be seen how this famous misunderstanding will end…
