A survey by the Russian IT specialist reveals that the number of information leaks from organizations increased from 47% in 2022 to 56% in 2023. 11% of attacks targeted credentials.

Data security has been put to the test in the past year. According to a study by the Russian IT company “Positive Technologies”, one in two successful cyber attacks worldwide resulted in the leakage of confidential information. The study entitled “Current Cyber Threats for Organizations: 2023 Results” shows that the number of information leaks from organizations increased from 47% in 2022 to 56% in 2023.

This increase is explained, among other things, by the increased frequency of attacks against secure data transmission systems, specifies “Positive Technologies”, noting that 45% of successful attacks against organizations in 2023 resulted in data theft, while 19% of attacks resulted in a leak of classified business information.

Furthermore, 11% of the attacks targeted credentials while 10% resulted in the theft of medical data, according to the study. The information obtained is used in various ways, with some hackers trying to extract large sums of money from victims by threatening to publish the data, the study continues, citing as an example the $70 million ransom demand sent by hackers to the Taiwanese chip manufacturer TSMC.

According to Irina Zinovkina, head of the research group at Positive Technologies, the stolen data can be used for further manipulation or social manipulation. Almost half of successful attacks were carried out using this method, and the fraudsters almost always manipulated targets through email services, she said.

The human factor also plays a role in information leaks, the study notes, citing the case of Northern Ireland police when the data of 10,000 employees was mistakenly published online.
