Martin R. (29, name changed) enjoyed a cozy evening at the Schweizerhaus in Vienna with five family members. “After two hours we asked for the bill. The waiter did a quick calculation and then said 193.80 euros. Of course, we believed that the tip was not included with this amount, and we increased it to 205 euros,” he told “Heute”.
But they were still suspicious and therefore asked for the bill. There they experienced a surprise: “The bill was 173 euros for food and drinks and 20.80 euros ‘TIP’.” Nobody pointed out to the group that the tip was already on the bill. “Otherwise we wouldn’t have added anything else. We gave a tip of almost 35 euros. You feel like you’re being mocked!”, says Martin R.
Complaint
The Viennese complained to the responsible waiter in the Schweizerhaus. “He apologized and gave out the 15 euro difference. But even after a conversation with the restaurant manager remains a very bitter aftertaste, if you had given almost 20 percent tip without asking without a bill, which we would not have received. It’s unfortunate that the tip is simply turned up.”
“Today” asked the Schweizerhaus what the surcharge on the bill was all about. “Unfortunately, that was a mistake,” explains restaurant manager Peter R. “Normally, the customers decide for themselves how much to tip. The waiters don’t usually do that.” They recently switched to a new payment system, and card payment is now also possible in the Schweizerhaus. The new system sometimes still makes mistakes, which is why this addition appears. We are working to fix the error.
