Las Vegas. In the renewed investigation into the unexplained death of US rapper Tupac Shakur, who was shot almost 30 years ago, the police are apparently looking in the vicinity of an old and long-dead rival of Shakur named Orlando Anderson. Anderson’s uncle’s wife, Duane “Keffe D” Davis, lived in a home that investigators searched Monday. This emerges from publicly available documents, including the electoral register.

Las Vegas police only confirmed that they had executed a search warrant in the neighboring town of Henderson on Monday. Further details on possible clues and suspects were not given.

Residents in the Henderson neighborhood told the AP news agency they saw police arrest a man and woman there. The Swat special unit was also on site. The man and woman came out of the house, put their hands on their heads, and slowly backed toward the officers, said Don Sansouci, who said he was watching from the sidewalk. Whether it was Davis and his wife remained unclear. The neighbor said he didn’t know her by name.

Tupac Shakur’s rival was considered a suspect early on

Anderson, Shakur’s old rival, was an early suspect in the murder. He denied any involvement and died himself two years later in a gang shooting in Compton, California.

Investigators told the AP that computers, photos and books, including Anderson’s uncle Davis’ autobiography, were confiscated from the home. The title is Compton Street Legend.

Shakur, then 25, was shot dead under mysterious circumstances on a Las Vegas street in 1996 while he was in a black BMW with Marion “Suge” Knight, head of Death Row Records. According to police, the two were waiting at a red light when a white Cadillac pulled up next to them and shots rang out. Shakur was hit by multiple bullets and taken to a hospital, where he died six days later. There were no arrests in the case. The police had said in the past that the investigation had quickly stalled – partly because witnesses had refused to cooperate.

However, in 2018, after being diagnosed with cancer, Davis admitted that he was in the front of the Cadillac with his nephew Anderson in the back seat. Shakur was also shot from the back seat, he said in an interview, without clearly naming Anderson as the perpetrator. In his 2019 memoir, Davis claimed he told investigators the truth ten years earlier, in exchange for which they dropped other charges against him.

Court documents show Davis has been wanted on an arrest warrant since July 2022 for failing to show up for a court date.
