Unexplained Illness Kills 10 Children: Investigating the Cause in Bouaké, Ivory Coast

A new tragedy in the center of the country. Ten children aged 5 to 12 died from an illness of unknown origin. Strong victims of “ convulsions “, of ” diarrhea ” and of ” vomiting “, the victims fell into a coma before dying.

Up to 76 people were hospitalized at the Bouaké University Hospital. The majority of these patients have now left the healthcare facility. Nine of them are still under surveillance, including one person placed in intensive care and two pregnant women.

According to medical sources, all of them consumed a “ corn porridge » in Niangban, a village located regarding thirty kilometers south of Bouaké.

Last December and January, at least sixteen people from the village of Kpo-Kahankro, 20 km from Niangban, lost their lives following a mysterious illness.

The villagers first accused a fetish of being the cause of a mystical evil. The Ministry of Health concluded that there was contamination with clostridium, a bacteria found on a fetish buried in the village.

« These are the same symptoms, we think they are the same phenomenon “, a medical source told RFI on Monday who suspects that a pesticide is the cause of these hospitalizations. On Monday, a scientific investigation team from the INHP ​​went to Bouaké.
