This is probably not how travelers imagined their flight from the USA to Spain: A sick passenger prompted the pilots to return to the place of departure.
A flight from the US city of Atlanta in the state of Georgia to the Spanish metropolis of Barcelona arrived at its destination eight hours late because a passenger had severe diarrhea. Flight DL194 of the US airline Delta took off as scheduled on Friday at 8:45 p.m. – but two hours after take-off, over the US state of Virginia, the pilots decided to cancel the trip. This is how it is reported, among other things, by the British “Daily Mail”.
A pilot explained the situation over the air, and an audio recording is now circulating on social media. “We have a passenger who had diarrhea throughout the plane,” the statement said.
“It was trickling down the aisle and smelled horrible”
A user reported on the extraordinary situation on the online service X (formerly Twitter). Her partner was on board. “It was pretty bad. It trickled down the aisle and smelled awful.” Apparently, the crew used disinfectants for disposal. “It just made it smell like vanilla,” the woman wrote.
According to reports, the plane landed back in Atlanta around 10:40 p.m. Paramedics picked up the sick passenger. The machine was then thoroughly cleaned, as can be seen from comments on X. Accordingly, the plane was even cleaner than before when it boarded again. The cleaners also ripped out the carpet and replaced it.

At around 3 a.m. the plane took off again and landed safely – and without incident – in Spain after a flight of around 8.5 hours. According to the Daily Mail, Delta Air Lines only announced that a medical event had occurred on flight DL194 from Atlanta to Barcelona. The airline did not give any details. We apologize for the delays and inconveniences. Nothing was initially known about the patient’s state of health and the cause of the disease.
