Unified Tax Regime for Cross-Border Workers: Euregio Meuse-Rhine Calls for Government Collaboration

The Belgium-Germany-Netherlands border region is asking the governments of the three countries for a unified tax regime for cross-border workers. Depending on the region, it is especially in the case of working from home that there is a problem.

The Euregio Meuse-Rhine unites the regions located along the border. In Belgium, it includes Limburg, Liège and the Eastern Cantons. The Euregio sent a letter to Finance Minister Vincent Van Peteghem and his colleagues from the other two countries.

Since the pandemic, working from home has grown a lot, they say. A framework agreement has therefore been concluded at European level to align the rules relating to social security. Such an agreement does not yet exist for tax matters, as they are not regulated at European level. Similar circumstances can therefore lead to fundamentally different taxes in border regions, says the Euregio.
