Unión La Calera’s debut in the 2024 CONMEBOL Sudamericana Cup did not go unnoticed. In a confrontation against Alianza, the Chilean team showed a particular alignment that generated some controversy among spectators.
The Calerano club had to travel to Colombian soil to face the first date of the group stage of the Copa Sudamericana at the Armando Maestre Pavajeau stadium. They share Group B with Cruzeiro from Brazil and with Universidad Católica from Ecuador.
Specifically, the most striking thing was not coach Manuel Fernández’s tactical scheme of four defenders, five midfielders and a center forward, but the choice of players for the starting eleven, mostly foreigners. This formation was not alone in that, since Unión La Calera definitely became Argentinian to call on its audience to buy tickets for the continental competition.
“I acquired your South American pack,” was the particular call from the cement workers to their fans, in a clear trans-Andean tone.
After the above, Calera fans criticized the club and the least they said was “They took away our entire identity.”
