Almost a year ago, employees of the Apple Glasgow they managed to unionize, being the first Maçã store to organize in such a way in the United Kingdom. Even with the company’s opposition, they conducted a voting process and joined a union organization in order to negotiate their labor issues collectively.

And the first victory after unionization was achieved this week. The union voted to reject Apple’s salary model, managing to reach an agreement with the company. The store’s employees got raises and compensation in line with those obtained by the Scottish public sector, with salary adjustments that amounted to 7% in some cases.

Today, Apple Glasgow reached an agreement on payment after negotiations. Members voted to reject Apple’s pay model and won, in its place, minimal raises and compensation for all team members, as well as improved pay for the majority of the team, with the majority receiving 7% [de aumento].

According to the union, Apple wished not to pay greater compensation to some of its employees, but collective negotiations managed to prevent this intention. It is worth remembering that, among the company’s arguments against unionization, is that the union would be a third party in the relationship between employees and the company, making negotiations more complex.

Maçã’s position against the unionization movement is not new: the company’s head of retail, Deirdre O’Brien, has even recorded a video appealing to employees not to use this option. The Cupertino giant has also been accused of violating labor laws on some occasions, generating interventions from government bodies.

With the victory, the Scottish union highlighted that this would be just one example of how union organizations can benefit workers, as they managed to change the payment model to something “more egalitarian and less dependent on arbitrary metrics”. It will be interesting to see how Apple reacts to episodes like this in other negotiations.
