BOGOTÁ (AP) — The special representative of the UN Secretary General in Colombia, Carlos Ruiz Massieu, assured on Wednesday that the Security Council is discussing his participation in verifying the ceasefire between the government and the National Liberation Army guerrillas (THE N).
Ruiz Massieu referred to the issue in a dialogue with journalists that also addressed the humanitarian crisis in the south of Chocó, Colombian Pacific department, and the progress in the implementation of the peace agreement with the Farc.
The ceasefire between the government of President Gustavo Petro and the ELN was an agreement reached in the middle of the peace process that has been underway since August of last year.
The two parties requested the United Nations Security Council to monitor and verify this cessation of offensive actions.
According to Ruiz Massieu, in recent days he has held talks with several of the member states of the Security Council and they are still in “discussions” about the modalities of their participation in the monitoring and verification of the ceasefire with the ELN.
The representative was “convinced” that by August 3 – when the suspension of offensive operations is expected to fully begin – there will be a response from the multilateral organization.
Ruiz Massieu also spoke of the humanitarian crisis in the south of Chocó, in the Colombian Pacific, and which keeps around 9,000 people trapped by clashes between the ELN and the Clan de Golfo, a criminal group dedicated to drug trafficking.
On this issue, the representative stated that the UN is “concerned” about the situation and that it is a matter that it has been discussing with delegates of the Catholic Church seeking actions to alleviate the crisis.
