Caracas.- This Thursday, the Chancellor of the Republic, Yván Gil, celebrated the decision of the Human Rights Council (HR) of the United Nations (UN), to condemn the imposition of unilateral coercive measures.

“We celebrate that the United Nations Human Rights Council approved a new resolution condemning Unilateral Coercive Measures, for being an instrument of violation of fundamental rights of peoples. This is a new victory for Bolivarian Peace Diplomacy and International Law,” Gil wrote through the X social network.

For his part, the permanent representative of Venezuela to the UN in Geneva, Switzerland, Hector Constant, welcomed the resolution adopted on Thursday by the Human Rights Council.

“New victory of International Law! Adopted today Resolution of the UN Human Rights Council condemning MCU: ‘no State may resort to or encourage recourse to any type of measure (…), in order to coerce another State to obtain from it the subordination of the exercise of its rights sovereigns or to obtain advantages of any kind from him…” wrote the diplomat on social network X.

In this sense, the resolution highlights that unilateral coercive measures are contrary to international law, international humanitarian law, the Charter and the norms and principles that regulate peaceful relations between States.

This was announced by the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) after adopting draft resolution A/HRC/54/L.26 on human rights and unilateral coercive measures, which had 32 votes in favor, 13 in against and 2 abstentions.

In the text, it is declared “deeply dismayed by the negative repercussions of unilateral coercive measures on the right to life, the right to health and medical care, the right not to suffer hunger, the right to a standard of living adequate, to food, to education, to work and housing, and the right to development.”

Furthermore, the UN body expresses its alarm at the disproportionate and indiscriminate human costs of unilateral sanctions and their negative effects on the civilian population, particularly women and children, of the States against which they are directed.
