The health situation continues to deteriorate in the United States as the COVID-19 pandemic experiences an upsurge due to the Delta variant and stagnant vaccination.

“The epidemic is out of control again, especially in the southern United States,” said Dr Julien J. Cavanagh, physician at Massachusetts General Hospital. In about a week, we went from 75,000 to 80,000 cases per day and I fear that at this rate (…) we will again reach 150,000-200,000 cases per day in the coming weeks. ”
According to the doctor, the strong contagiousness of the Delta variant is the main responsible for this new upsurge.
The increase in cases will also mean higher hospitalizations and the death toll, he says.
“When the vaccination campaign started in April, we would have had to continue at the excellent pace with which we had started. We had more than 4 million injections per day, ”says Dr Cavanagh.
Thus, the United States could have counted on a collective immunity where approximately 80% of the population received the two doses to face the variant Delta.
According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), just 49.5% of Americans are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. In addition, they are 57.5% to have received a single dose of the vaccine.
Dr Julien J. Cavanagh notes that vaccination has been particularly successful among those over 65, whose population is 80% fully vaccinated, but that it is crumbling among the youngest.
But above all, the doctor regrets that the political aspect is invited into the dance.
“We see that unfortunately, politics have come to instill in this vaccination campaign and that the conservative movement has come to reject vaccination. You can feel it on the ground, ”he says.
