It’s a good sign for America that the Supreme Court agrees on the core: Trump must be allowed to run everywhere. But that doesn’t mean the court stayed out of the election.
FIt remains bad news for American democracy that the authoritarian Donald Trump has a chance of returning to the White House, where he plans to act as a “dictator” at least on the first day. Still, it’s good news that the Supreme Court has now unanimously put a stop to Colorado and other states’ pre-election exclusions.
A bit of cooling
This was not a political rescue act by a “Trump majority of judges”, but rather a decision by the three left-liberal judges, albeit with differences in the details. Around “Super Tuesday” with 15 primaries, this will probably not completely cool down the heated tempers in the United States, but it may calm them down a bit.
By finding that a constitutional clause unearthed by Trump opponents does not allow individual states to disqualify candidates for the highest federal offices, the justices sidestepped the thorniest question: Did Trump participate in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021 Rebellion “involved”? There is a lot to be said for this, but not even special prosecutor Jack Smith, who is prosecuting Trump for election manipulation, went that far in his indictment.
This important trial was supposed to begin this week, but the Supreme Court is taking its time to consider Trump’s grotesque immunity claim. This time game is the actual friendship service of the “Trump judges”. The signal of unanimity in the most recent judgment cannot hide this.
