At a ceremony in Hanoi on the afternoon of 1 November, champion Doan Le Anh Duc of Hanoi Amsterdam High School for the Gifted was awarded the top prize: full tuition plus one year of accommodation in London, valued at more than £67,000, or roughly 2.3 billion Vietnamese dong.
Why does an education award belong on a business wire? A scholarship program now in its third year is, in effect, a talent pipeline feeding a newly consolidated institution, and a bet on Vietnam as a recruitment market at a moment when the two countries mark 50 years of diplomatic relations.
Prizes Split Evenly Across Four Finalists
- The London prize covers 100% of tuition and one year of accommodation, worth over £67,000 (~2.3 billion dong); the three domestic prizes cover 100% of tuition at Greenwich Vietnam, each worth over 450 million dong.
- All four finalists choose their track: study in the UK or pursue a British-standard bachelor’s degree at Greenwich Vietnam’s four campuses in Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho.
- The award is split evenly across the four finalists by design — not a winner-take-most structure — which widens the number of students locked into the Greenwich system from one to four per year.
November 1, Hanoi: The Winners Are Named
The four scholarship recipients are Doan Le Anh Duc (Hanoi Amsterdam High School for the Gifted), runner-up Nguyen Huy Quang Minh (Thai Binh High School for the Gifted, Hung Yen province), and two co-third-place finishers, Tran Vu Gia Bao (Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted, Khanh Hoa province) and Ly Thai Duong (Hung Vuong High School for the Gifted, Phu Tho province).
The students' families attended as well.
The split breaks down this way. The champion’s package — full fees plus accommodation for a year in London — exceeds £67,000. Each of the other three packages covers 100% of tuition for a bachelor’s degree at Greenwich Vietnam, valued above 450 million dong, usable at any of the four Vietnamese campuses. Four awards, one university, two countries.
How the Prize Money Compounds Across Three Years
The precedent case shows what the prize is worth in practice: at the 2024 awards, Tran Trung Kien, runner-up of the 2024 season from Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted in Phu Yen province, received a scholarship covering 100% of tuition plus one year of accommodation in London. He begins studying computer science, specializing in artificial intelligence, in the UK from September 2025.
But the balance sheet tells a different story — a structural one. Greenwich has operated in Vietnam through a partnership with FPT University since 2009, and thousands of Vietnamese students have since completed British-standard undergraduate degrees through the Greenwich Vietnam system.
Greenwich’s Ranking Claims Meet a 2026 Reorganization
The university cites its credentials: 86th worldwide in the 2023 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, the top-ranked university in London per StudentCrowd’s 2023 ranking, and a Gold rating in the UK’s Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). Those are the institution’s own reported figures and third-party rankings as stated in the material published alongside the announcement.
The 2026 merger with Kent changes the shape of the offer. A 50,000-student group spanning London and Kent is the kind of consolidation UK higher education has increasingly turned to under funding pressure — and it means this year’s scholarship holders would enter a different institutional structure than the 2024 recipient did. Neither the university nor the announcement specifies how the LASE merger affects cross-campus enrollment for Vietnamese scholarship students. That question remains open.
The Track Record: London Prize Money vs. Domestic Prize Money
Set the two prize tiers side by side and the asymmetry is clear: the London package is worth roughly five times the domestic one in stated value. What the program trades off in prize concentration it recovers in reach — four students committed to the Greenwich system each year instead of one, all with a study-abroad upgrade option.
What Hoang Van Anh Wants From the Partnership
What is not yet known is how the finalists will split between the London track and the Vietnamese campuses, and what the LASE merger means for future cohorts’ destination options. Those answers arrive with enrollment decisions, not with press releases.
