The new Tera type has been hinted to be related to Legendary Pokemon Terapagos, and its effects on moves like Tera Blast and STAB abilities are still visible. The Pokémon Company teased the addition of a new species of Terra Pokémon, Scarlet and Violet, in its upcoming DLC, The Indigo Disk. The teaser was shown briefly at the end of a three-minute trailer during the conclusion of the 2023 Pokémon World Championships, which left many people speechless. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet players guess what Tera’s new type is and what it can do in battle. Introduced in Generation IX, the Terastal Battle Pokémon Scarlet and Violet gimmick allows trainers to change their Pokémon type to a different type mid-battle, adding another layer of complexity to competitive battles. Following in the footsteps of the Dynamax raid battles in Pokémon Sword and Shield, Terastal’s ploy allowed Pokémon Scarlet and Violet to host a variety of Terra Raid battles, including a seven-star Terra Raid battle against the matchless Mewtwo. While there are currently 18 types of Tera that are compatible with every Pokémon type at the time of this writing, The Indigo Disk will increase that number by one when the DLC arrives in the winter of 2023. First, the 19th Tera type icon in the battle list is a rainbow-colored skin, which is similar to the skin of Terapagos, the Legendary Pokemon from The Indigo Disk DLC. This could indicate that catching Terapagos might be the key to unlocking this new Tera type of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Additionally, this new Tera-type isn’t exclusive to Terapagos, as The Pokemon Company used Baxcalibur to seem to confirm that any Pokemon whose Tera-type can be changed to the new Tera-type. It remains to be seen what methods will be used to get the new Tera type into The Indigo Disk. As for using it in battle, the new Tera-type has been shown to affect Tera Blast, which is in line with how the move-type changed to match the Pokémon’s Tera-type. However, the outlines of Baxcalibur’s Dragon and Ice attacks in the menu also have the same rainbow colors as the Terastallize icon. This can refer to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Players that move can grant the same type of regular Attack Bonus (STAB) to take advantage of the new Tera type in some abilities. Between the reveal of the new Tera type, and the return of previous Pokémon in The Indigo Disk DLC, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet players will have a lot to look forward to in the expansion.
