Mexico is one of the countries with the most biodiversity in the world and, in addition, it has great ancestral knowledge. So much so that scientists and experts often research the plants that are used in traditional medicine to alleviate conditions. That is why here we tell you what Judas gut is and how using this plant could improve your quality of life.

According to the Digital Library of Traditional Mexican Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), this plant is scientifically called Cissus sicyoides L. and is popularly known as Sanalotodo or Judas Tripe.

It is a woody vine that usually climbs trees, its leaves are heart-shaped and the flowers are green or yellow-green. As for the fruits, they are globose and when ripe they are black.

According to this same UNAM specialized file, in states such as Veracruz, Tabasco, Morelos and Guerrero this plant is used for various functions and here we tell you.

  • Hair loss: the stem can be cooked in the form of a rinse
  • Anti-inflammatory: make soap and grind the fresh leaves to apply to the swelling. You can also place the lightly roasted leaf on the wound to reduce inflammation.
  • Grains: the leaves are cooked on the comal or embers, squeezed over the grain until it bursts and pus flows out. The leaves can also be macerated in alcohol and applied to the grains when needed.
  • Stomach pain: when there is inflammation of the belly due to excessive eating, the plant is boiled together with the herb at once. It can be ingested or placed as a suppository.
  • Earache: the juice of the scrubbed leaves is used.

The Maximum House of Studies points out that “it has been shown that the leaves, stems and roots have a depressant effect on the central nervous system.”
