Unrest at the rescue station – now the Armed Forces are responding

Six out of 16 rescuers at the Skagen Rescue Station have resigned.

This is confirmed by Michael Pedersen, manager of the rescue station.

The reason is allegedly a disagreement with the management of the rescue station, according to TV2 Nord.

Michael Pedersen cannot comment on what the discrepancies are.

Have to wait for help

The resignations affect the rescue service, he notes.

– It is critical, says Michael Pedersen.

However, not such that distressed sailors off Skagen will no longer be able to get help.

If there are no rescuers from Skagen who can sail out, rescue boats from Hirtshals and Sæby will be sent instead.

– We have always helped each other, but the response time is getting longer, says the manager of the rescue station in Skagen.

Maybe closing days

He cannot deny that there may be days when the rescue station in Skagen has to remain completely closed due to a lack of manpower.

The management of the coastal rescue service will not comment on the dispute, but refers to the Norwegian Armed Forces. The coastal rescue service belongs to the Norwegian Armed Forces.

– We must find a solution

Here is the message from René Fuglsig, Chief of Staff in the Naval Command:

– Disagreement at the rescue station in Skagen has caused some to terminate their availability contracts. We must find a solution to this, and we must do so quickly.

He describes the dispute as a personnel matter, which he does not want to elaborate on.

Skagen Redningsstation has informed the Swedish Navy Command that there may be rescue situations that they cannot handle because they cannot gather enough personnel after the dismissals.

Total preparedness

– My picture is that we will still be able to solve the tasks, says René Fuglsig.

And refers to the total preparedness with 21 coastal rescue stations as well as rescue helicopters, maritime patrol units and home guard ships.

The chief of staff emphasizes, however, that both volunteers and permanent employees at the rescue stations are a crucial part of the rescue response. Therefore, he hopes that the dispute in Skagen can be resolved, so that the six who have resigned will return.
