Watan: The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) announced the suspension of its services inside the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp, south Lebanon, as of Friday, in light of the continued presence of armed men in its facilities.

In a statement, UNRWA called on all armed men to evacuate its facilities, especially schools. To ensure the provision of aid and services to the camp residents.

It estimated that the schools in the camp would not be ready to receive 3,200 children at the start of the new school year, “given the repeated violations, including those that occurred in the past, and the great damage that occurred.”

UNRWA again called on the armed men to immediately evacuate its facilities. To ensure that urgent assistance is provided to the refugees without any obstacles, stressing that it “does not tolerate any violation of the sanctity and neutrality of its facilities.”

The Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp for Palestinians witnessed armed clashes at the end of last July, which lasted for several days. As a result, 11 people were killed and more than 60 injured, in addition to damage to property and infrastructure inside and around the camp.

Ain al-Hilweh is the largest refugee camp in Lebanon and houses about 50,000 registered refugees, according to United Nations data, while unofficial estimates indicate that its population exceeds 70,000.

UNRWA provides public services that include schools, primary health care, and humanitarian aid to Palestine refugees in the Gaza Strip, West Bank, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon.
