The death of international composer Sayed Darwish

In September 1923, the controversial murder of Mr. Darwish occurred in Alexandria Governorate.

Mr. Darwish Al-Bahr was born in Alexandria Governorate on March 17, 1892. At the age of 16, he married and became the head of a family at that young age.

Sayed Darwish became a professional in music and playing the oud, and learned to write musical notes. He traveled to Cairo in 1917, and there he became very famous, and composed for all the theater groups on Imad El-Din Street.

Among the most famous bands that he worked with were George Abyad, Naguib Al-Rihani, and Ali Al-Kassar, until the 1919 revolution broke out, so he sang the song “Arise, O Egyptian,” and composed many patriotic and popular songs that inflamed the enthusiasm of the Egyptians at that time.

In early September 1923, Sayyid Darwish went to his hometown of Alexandria to arrange to receive the return of leader Saad Pasha Zaghloul from exile. However, by September 9, Sayyed Darwish passed away at the age of 32 in a mysterious and sudden manner.

Two days later, on September 17, 1923, Al-Seyassah newspaper published the news of his death, after his body was quickly carried to its final resting place before anyone knew he was dead.

Sayed Darwish was buried in Al-Manara Cemetery in Alexandria, and he wrote on his tombstone: “Oh my visitor, do not forget me from a good invitation… and raise your hand to the sky and recite Al-Fatihah for my soul.”

The stories behind this death differed, the first of which was that the British at the time were the ones who poisoned him to get rid of him because of his patriotic songs that incited against them, especially since they refused to autopsy his body and bury him without any investigation into the incident.

The second story is that he took an overdose of cocaine, which led to his immediate death.

As for the third novel, it is in the custody of Aisha Abdel-Al, Sayyed Darwish’s muse. A friend of Sayyed’s was in love with an unknown singer, and he asked Sayyed to train her, but after a while Sayyed Darwish became convinced that her voice was bad and that she could not become a famous singer, so he left her, which angered her. She told her lover that Sayyed Darwish tried to flirt with her, so this friend offered Sayyed Darwish a glass of wine containing morphine, and he died as a result of this glass.
