The Ministry of Health and Population revealed the updated definition of the infected case Rabies diseaseas follows: Suspected case: 1 patient suffering from an acute neurological syndrome (inflammation of the brain, characterized by forms of hyperactivity or paralysis that ends in a coma and then death, usually resulting from respiratory failure within a period of 7-10 days from the beginning of the symptoms.

Brain infections usually result in a feeling of fear, headache, malaise, lethargy, and non-specific changes in sensation. As the condition progresses, partial, mild, or complete paralysis occurs. Contraction of the swallowing muscles when trying to swallow leads to a fear of water, followed by delirium and convulsions, with a history of being bitten or scratched by an animal suspected of being infected with the virus.

Possible case: 2, a suspected case with exposure to a bite or scratch from an animal that was laboratory-confirmed to be infected with the rabies virus.

Confirmed case: 3 suspected or probable cases that were laboratory confirmed by:-

RT PCR of saliva or cerebrospinal fluid and biopsy sample

Or the appearance of viral antibodies if the vaccination was not previously taken

“direct fluorescent antibody test”

Isolation of rabies virus in a tissue culture or in a laboratory mouse from a sample of saliva or cerebrospinal fluid

Or from the central nervous system.
