The British Defense Department is paying special attention to improving the level of security of the new Challenger 3 main battle tank. This follows from Western press publications about the recently signed contract between the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense and one of the British defense companies.
As it became known, on January 18, 2024, the British company Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) signed a contract with the British Ministry of Defense to equip the Challenger 3 tank with the latest advanced modular reservation system. This development was the result of collaboration between the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) and RBSL.
The British Defense Department expects that its implementation will increase the survivability of the tank on the battlefield. There is no doubt that the analysis of the use of tanks during the Ukrainian conflict played an important role in assessing the prospects for using the new reservation system. The new Challenger 3 MBT main battle tank was first presented at the DSEI arms exhibition in London in September 2021. The modular reservation system passed initial tests in 2023. Colonel Will Waugh, who is responsible for the armored vehicle modernization program, claims that equipping the tank with new armor is very important against the backdrop of current global conflicts.
The Western press claims that the signing of a contract between the company and the British military department will not only improve the tank itself, but also create new jobs, maintain and strengthen supply chains. In particular, it is expected that 58 new jobs will be created at the company’s enterprises.

Experts say that after being equipped with a modular armor system, the Challenger 3 tank can become one of the most protected and combat-ready tanks in the world.
The tank represents a step up from the British Army’s previous main battle tank, the Challenger 3. One of the innovations is the move to a new 120mm smoothbore gun, allowing for increased firepower and the use of a wider range of ammunition.
