Urban rodeos: police reinforcements in Montpellier, Béziers and Perpignan, announces Gérald Darmanin

The Minister of the Interior announced in an interview with the Journal du Dimanche, on August 21, the provision of new units of mobile forces to the prefects of certain metropolises. In total, Montpellier, Béziers and Perpignan will share 240 men, with the fight against drug trafficking and urban rodeos in sight.

The Minister of the Interior Gérald Damanin granted, this Sunday, August 21, a long interview to our colleagues from the JDD. He comes back to it in particular on the procedure for the expulsion of Imam Iquioussen – “he is one of those who sow an atmosphere of jihadism” – or on the series of arson attacks that have hit France – “We must improve the work of judicial inquiry”. On this last point, the Minister announced the creation of 3,000 posts of “green policemen” responsible for tracking down attacks on nature and ecology.

We will create 11 new mobile forces units. I have decided to leave some permanently in the metropolises

But it is above all the urban rodeos, at the heart of the news for a few weeks, which occupy Gérald Darmanin. Always in the JDD, the Minister pleads for the strict application of the two laws already in action, rather than for a new legislative project. “We can, for example, use telephone data to prove the links between the arrested person and the owner of the motorcycle”, explains the minister, recalling that 2,200 people had been arrested and 1,800 vehicles seized since the beginning of the year. .

“We are going to create 11 new mobile force units. I have decided to leave some in the metropolises to fight against drug trafficking and urban rodeos”, also announced Gérald Darmanin. With, at the end of the day, allocations for two areas of Occitania.

Two units, i.e. 160 men, must soon be assigned to Montpellier and Béziers, under the supervision of the prefect of Hérault Hugues Moutouh. In the region, another unit will join Perpignan, under the authority of the prefect of Pyrénées-Orientales Étienne Stoskopf. The eight other units will be distributed in the Lille metropolitan area, in the Cannes and Nice area, in the Marseille and Arles area, and in the Lyon metropolitan area.
