Urgent Call for Measles Vaccines: Ensuring the Health of Children in Kwilu Province

The measles vaccination campaign, which was to be launched several weeks ago in the province of Kwilu, is experiencing serious difficulties. Beyond the strike of nurses and administrative staff in the health sector, the vaccine is not yet available in order to respond to this disease which affects almost all health zones in the province.

The disease has caused 108 deaths since January out of 3,411 cases. The provincial health minister specifies that among these 108 deaths, there are at least 79 children aged zero to five years old.

The recently held sixth meeting of the provincial coordinating committee for measles vaccination ended with a plea to the central government for the availability of vaccines to launch the response.

“May the central level be able to deploy the vaccines and the funds necessary for the organization of this activity,” Bena Mutuyi, provincial minister of health, told the press.

This vaccination campaign will protect 1,175,050 children from zero to fifty-nine months, targeted throughout the Kwilu province.
