Urgent Call to Open the Lachin Corridor: Humanitarian Crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh

2023-07-15 03:30:22

Thousands of people demonstrated in Stepanakert, the largest city of Nagorno-Karabakh, calling on Baku to open the Lachin corridor, which is the only artery linking Armenia to this separatist region. They chanted, “No to the blockade!” and “Open the way of life!”.

Last Tuesday, Azerbaijan closed the corridor, accusing the Armenian Red Cross of carrying out “smuggling” operations, which was denied by the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Armenia has been warning the international community of the possibility of serious humanitarian problems in this separatist region since last December, due to the lack of food and medicine resulting from the restriction of traffic through the Lachin corridor.

Noting that the region includes an Armenian majority, but is located on the internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan. The two countries have been fighting over control of Nagorno-Karabakh since the late 1980s.
