URGENT: Young Mother with Incurable Cancer Fights for Coverage of Life-Saving Treatment in Alberta

Stéphanie Alain, a young mother from Rouyn-Noranda struggling with incurable cancer, asks the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec to reconsider its decision to refuse to pay her the cost of experimental treatment in Alberta.

Ms. Alain has been fighting cancer, alveolar sarcoma, for a year. The mother of the family was to participate in a clinical study and receive new treatments in Calgary.

However, the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) has just refused to cover the costs for this treatment. Health Canada approved the treatment, the government of Alberta and the team of researchers from Calgary too, underlines Stéphanie Alain.

The Calgary team had asked me to book my accommodation, because I was starting the first phase of treatment in two weeks. So I started my treatment in mid-August, in Calgary, because everything was done. And on July 27, the day after I had reserved my accommodation and was happy to say: ”Let’s go!”, the specialists received the letter that the RAMQ refused to financially support my treatment, she says resentfully.

Ms. Alain therefore asks the population to support her by signing an online petition to ask the RAMQ to review its decision.

I don’t understand this decision, I don’t agree and I can’t accept this without saying anything. I will therefore make my request for review, a personal process that I am in the process of writing, but I launched this petition in my process of overturning the decision of the RAMQ, she mentions.

The Régie de l’Assurance Maladie du Québec did not want to comment on this file for the moment.

Daniel Bernard gets involved in the file

The CAQ MP for Rouyn-Noranda/Témiscamingue, Daniel Bernard, recognizes that the situation of Stéphanie Alain is “dramatic” and he promises his help to have the decision of the RAMQ reviewed.

I was arrested yesterday (Monday) and I took steps with Minister Dubé’s office, he said. We need their help. I know that his team had already been informed and taken steps with the RAMQ. We should receive additional information today or later this week that should help to review this decision. We must be able to help Mrs. Alain, that is close to my heart.

Daniel Bernard hopes that the file can evolve very quickly, considering the urgency of the situation.

His doctor was clear in the letter he sent to the minister, specifies the deputy. We can’t waste time. I’m crossing my fingers to have a new decision by the end of the week, at the latest next week. I know the RAMQ decision revolves around the fact that this is an experimental treatment that was to be undertaken out of province. But there is a way to find a solution to this.
