Leaders of the SAG-AFTRA actors’ union, which has been on strike against Hollywood television and film studios for a month and a half, September 1 reported that they cannot achieve the desired result in negotiations with leading companies in the gaming industry.

The previous contract with the guild, the Interactive Media Agreement, expired back in 2022. Since then, it has been extended in the hope that the parties will be able to agree, but SAG-AFTRA claims that employers refuse to comply with their key requirements. Many of them relate to pay and the regulation of the use of artificial intelligence – just as in the case of the conflict between actors and film producers.

The similarity of the terms and conditions of the two SAG-AFTRA contracts is not a coincidence, but a predictable problem that affects both our industry and many others around the world.

Greed spreads as fast as wildfire. This contagion is poised to deprive the workers of their livelihood and the people of their place and importance in the industry.

Fran Drescher, President of SAG-AFTRA

In connection with the conflict, the union announced the start of a vote among its members – from September 5 to September 25, they must approve a possible strike or speak out against it. Provided that the members of the guild support the decision, the leaders of SAG-AFTRA will be able to continue negotiations on the 26th already ready to start a protest.

The video game companies that the union is negotiating with include both key publishers like Activision, Electronic Arts, Take-Two, Epic and WB Games, as well as recording and motion capture studios (major contractors and in-house studios).

Among the main requirements of SAG-AFTRA to employers:

regulation of the use of AI (voices and movements of actors should not be used to train generative neural networks without permission); salary increase corresponding to inflation (11% for current contracts, another 4% each for the second and third years of the agreement); mandatory five-minute breaks every hour of work for actors working in front of the camera; mandatory presence of medical personnel on the set during the filming of stunts; a ban on recording stunt stunts as an audition.

The previous major strike by actors against video game campaigns took place in 2016-2017. It lasted 183 days. Whether another protest will begin will not be known until the end of September.

The SAG-AFTRA strike in connection with the conflict with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) has been ongoing since July 14th. So far, no significant progress in negotiations with film studio owners has been reported.

One of the first to write about a possible strike by the Actors Guild against video game companies on the DTF was a user with the nickname Layben.
