The United States and the United Kingdom imposed sanctions on Iran on Thursday, targeting “Iran’s march program, steel industry and automakers” after last weekend’s attack on Israel , announced the US Treasury Department.

Washington’s sanctions target “16 individuals and two entities working on the production of Iranian drones”, including the Shahed drones which “were used during the April 13 attack”. London’s sanctions target “numerous Iranian military organizations, individuals and entities involved in the manufacturing of Iranian drones and ballistic missiles.”

US President Joe Biden said on Thursday the new sanctions were aimed at punishing Iran for threatening regional stability.

Biden explained that the sanctions target leaders and entities associated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, noting that he has directed his team, including the Treasury Department, to impose sanctions that weaken Iran’s military industry.

The US president said US allies would impose additional sanctions and measures in response to Iran’s weapons programs and its threat to stability, stressing that Washington was working in coordination with G7 countries.

The G7 countries – France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Japan – are expected to demand the imposition of individual sanctions targeting those involved in the Iranian missile supply chain, according to a Italian diplomatic source.

European Union leaders decided on Wednesday to impose new sanctions against companies producing drones and missiles, amid an attack by Iran last weekend, which caused minor damage after intercepting the majority of projectiles.

On Saturday evening, Iran launched an attack on Israel with hundreds of drones and missiles in response to a strike that destroyed its consulate in Damascus and killed seven members of the Revolutionary Guards, including two senior officers, on April 1 .
