US concerned that popular will is not reflected

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he has «serious concerns» by the election results announced on Monday by the National Electoral Council of Venezuela, which declared Nicolás Maduro the winner with 51.20% of the votes.

“We have serious concerns that the announced result does not reflect the will or the votes of the Venezuelan people”Blinken said in a statement, reported by CNN.

“It is critical that every vote is counted fairly and transparently, that election officials immediately share information with the opposition and independent observers without delay, and that electoral authorities publish detailed vote tabulations.”he added.

Blinken praised Venezuelan voters for what he called their “courage and commitment to democracy in the face of repression.”

“The international community is watching this very closely and will respond accordingly.”he claimed.

Earlier, the State Department said in a statement that it is “vitally important” that every vote be counted “fairly and transparently” in the Venezuelan presidential election.

Blinken called on election officials to release detailed vote tabulations to guarantee “transparency and accountability”.

“The United States supports the Venezuelan people and their democratic aspirations. We will continue to work with Venezuelan stakeholders and international partners to ensure that the democratic rights and freedoms of the Venezuelan people are respected.”“, he said.
