After being subsequently named team Olympic champions in 2022, the US figure skaters are hoping to receive their gold medals at the upcoming Summer Games in Paris. Ice dancing world champion Madison Chock made her wish public for the team the day after the doping ban against Russian runner Kamila Waliyeva was announced.

“We want a real Olympic medal ceremony,” said Chock, making the US athletes’ point of view clear. In terms of a timely implementation of the award ceremony, which was canceled two years ago at the Winter Games in Beijing due to the Valiyeva case, “for us that would be a ceremony surrounded by the Olympic spirit in Paris,” the 31-year-old continued: “That would be a dream scenario .”

With Valiyeva, who was suspected of doping, the Russian figure skaters won the team competition ahead of the USA at the 2022 Games. Due to the unclear situation at the time, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspended the awards ceremony until a decision was made. Due to the revocation of Valiyeva’s points by the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the US team moved up to gold at the beginning of the week, while Russia was also demoted to third place behind Japan.

However, a classic medal ceremony with a full podium seems hardly conceivable regardless of the venue. The implementation with Russian athletes is likely to be difficult to convey due to the sports-political disputes over Russia’s status in Paris and in world sport due to Moscow’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

At the US Olympic and Paralympics Committee, managing director Sarah Hirshland is assuming an award ceremony only for the late winners: “I have received clear instructions to initiate the awarding of the medals to the US team. We are in all due haste a certain flexibility and a certain leeway: it doesn’t have to be a medal ceremony with all three teams.”
