US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan meets with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince to review progress in Yemen peace efforts

The White House said that US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan met with the crown princeSaudi Arabia Prince Mohammed bin Salman, during a visit to the kingdom on Sunday, reviewed what the White House described as “significant progress” in peace efforts in Yemen.

In a visit aimed at bolstering often strained relations with Riyadh, Sullivan also held joint talks with the crown prince, Emirati National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, “to advance their shared vision of a safer Middle East.” Prosperity and interdependence with India and the world.

Sullivan’s meeting came after a period in which US-Saudi relations were damaged, due to oil production cuts by the Saudi-led OPEC + group, and disagreements over the killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.

“(Sullivan) reviewed significant progress in talks aimed at strengthening the 15-month-old truce in Yemen, and welcomed the ongoing UN-led efforts to end the war, in addition to addressing a range of other issues,” the White House statement said.

The statement added that Sullivan, senior assistant to US President Joe Biden for national security affairs, also thanked the crown prince for Saudi Arabia’s support for American citizens during the evacuation from Sudan.

The US State Department indicated that the US special envoy for Yemen, Tim Lenderking, traveled to Oman and Saudi Arabia earlier this month, to seek to advance peace efforts in Yemen.

A Saudi-led military coalition intervened in Yemen in 2015, after the Iran-aligned Houthis ousted the government from the capital, Sanaa.

A Saudi delegation, seeking a permanent ceasefire to end military involvement in the war, held peace talks in mid-April in Sanaa with the Houthi group, whose chief negotiator said the talks had made progress and that further discussions would take place to settle outstanding differences.
