Biden signs national defense authorization bill to help Taiwan strengthen self-defense
Following the U.S. Senate’s recent passing of the “National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024,” the U.S. House of Representatives passed a vote on December 14, Eastern Time, and the bill was signed into effect by U.S. President Biden today.
The National Defense Authorization Act for next year has 3,100 pages and a budget of US$886 billion, which is equivalent to NT$27.6 trillion. The amount is 3% more than last year. It is the highest amount of the National Defense Authorization Act in history.
In addition to providing funds for the US military, it is also expected to invest approximately NT$360 billion in the Indo-Pacific region, including authorizing the US Secretary of Defense to establish a comprehensive training program for the Taiwanese military, create an asymmetric defense strategy, and accelerate the delivery of arms sales.
Our Ministry of National Defense also recently pointed out that the bill includes the U.S. Congress’s oversight of the executive branch, implementation of the “Enhancing Taiwan Resilience Act”, assistance to Taiwan in formulating comprehensive training and institutionalized capability plans, expansion of bilateral military cyber security cooperation and military exchanges, etc. The provisions can enhance the overall training effectiveness and joint operations capabilities of the national military, deepen cyber security cooperation through existing exchanges, and strengthen China’s defense resilience.
